O-1

O-1 — Extraordinary Ability or Achievement

For people with demonstrated national or international recognition in their field.

Last reviewed: August 9, 2026

Visa overview

The O-1 is a temporary category for individuals who have risen to the top of their field and can evidence it. O-1A covers science, education, business and athletics; O-1B covers the arts and the motion picture and television industry. The standard is evidentiary rather than numerical: an applicant either holds a major internationally recognised award, or satisfies several of the listed criteria — such as published material about their work, original contributions of major significance, judging the work of others, or a critical role in distinguished organisations. A US employer or agent files the petition, so the category suits people with an ongoing engagement rather than an open-ended plan.

Who may qualify

  • Researchers and scientists with a substantial publication and citation record, or a record of peer review
  • Business figures whose contribution to their field is documented by independent sources
  • Artists, performers and creative professionals with a record of critical recognition
  • Film and television professionals with a demonstrated record of extraordinary achievement
  • Athletes and coaches competing or working at a nationally or internationally recognised level

This is general information about the category, not an assessment of your circumstances.

Key requirements

  • A major internationally recognised award, or evidence satisfying several of the listed criteria for the relevant branch
  • A US employer, agent or petitioner willing to file on your behalf
  • Concrete work in the United States: an itinerary, engagements, contracts or a defined role
  • A written advisory opinion from an appropriate peer group, labour organisation or management organisation, where one applies
  • Evidence that the recognition is sustained, not a single moment

Typical application process

  1. Assess honestly which criteria the evidence genuinely supports, and identify the gaps
  2. Assemble an evidence inventory mapped criterion by criterion, rather than a general portfolio
  3. Obtain independent letters from recognised figures who can speak to the significance of the work
  4. Secure the advisory opinion where the branch requires one
  5. The petitioner files with USCIS, with the itinerary or engagement documentation
  6. Respond to any Request for Evidence, which in this category usually targets a specific criterion
  7. On approval, apply for the visa at a consulate if outside the United States

Documents commonly required

  • Awards, prizes and the criteria under which they were granted
  • Publication list with citation metrics, and copies of key publications
  • Independent press or media coverage of your work, with translations where needed
  • Evidence of peer review, editorial or judging activity
  • Letters of recommendation from recognised independent experts
  • Evidence of memberships that require outstanding achievement for admission
  • Contracts, itineraries or engagement letters covering the proposed US work
  • Evidence of remuneration relative to others in the field, where relied on

Typical processing considerations

O-1 outcomes turn on the quality and independence of the evidence rather than its volume, so preparation time is usually the largest variable. Timing is further affected by how quickly advisory opinions and independent letters are obtained, the workload of the office handling the case, and whether a Request for Evidence is issued. No date or outcome can be guaranteed.
